Letters, 1945-1954.

Collection includes a letter dated 1945 to Rene Mendes-France in which Hartung expresses his willingness to participate in the "Exposition des Surindependants 45," but explains that his major canvases are too large to transport so he must exhibit smaller paintings and drawings in their stead; he alludes to his "return from the war" and the support of Henri Goetz for his inclusion in the show ("Impossible" is pencilled in red across the top of the letter). In another letter (3 p., 1954 June 12) to an unknown correspondent, Hartung comments on photographs (possibly of his own work) which have been sent to him and gives a brief autobiography. With an undated note in pencil.
